Let the journey begin

The first thing you need to consider when choosing your wedding transport is how close you are to the venue and reception. If it is nearby you may be able to hire one car that can drop off various members of the wedding party and return to pick up the Bride and her escort. However, if the ceremony or venue is a considerable distance you may need several vehicles.

Who needs transport?
The Groom and Best man will need transport to the ceremony. Traditionally they are the first to arrive and it is the duty of the Best man to get the Groom to the church on time. Ideally around thirty minutes early. It’s usual for the best man to drive or hire a taxi for them both although many car hire companies now offer specialist transport.

The Bridesmaids and the Bride’s mother should be next to arrive, about ten minutes before the Bride and her escort.

Finally the Bride and her escort arrive, usually in the most luxurious or unusual transport of the day such as a limo or classic car.

After the ceremony there should be a wedding car waiting to take the couple on to the reception unless the ceremony and reception are in the same place. Guests are usually responsible for their own transport but you may want to brief ushers or supply simple printed maps to help people find the way. Alternatively you may consider a bus or mini buses to move your guests to the reception.

 What’s available
There are many different types of wedding day transport available for hire, the favourite choice often being a vintage Rolls Royce or something similar. Check out your local car hire companies or surf the internet to check out what models and colours are available before you make you choice. White or

cream cars tend to get snapped up most quickly so don’t leave organising your transport until the last minute if you want that colour. Vintage cars are most popular and can look wonderful in the wedding pictures particularly with a uniformed chauffer.

Need to know
Don’t just hire the first car you see. Visit several hire car companies or check out local wedding fairs before you choose. There are several key question to ask, does the company have breakdown cover? Will they send another similar car if there is a problem (This is particularly relevant with vintage vehicles). Make sure you actually sit in the cars rather than just admiring them from the outside, will the Bride’s dress fit through the doors? Will she have enough room for the dress, train, veil and so on as well as the person giving her away?

Expect to pay a hire charge for the whole day or at least a half day. Be aware that during the peak season, June to September, many cars are going to be booked up every weekend so get your order in as early as possible. If your wedding is some distance away – say over 40 miles – you may be asked to pay extra mileage. You’ll need a deposit cheque once you’ve your dream car and expect to pay the balance in full well before the wedding. Find out of you can decorate the wedding car with your theme colours, or will the company do this for you? Make sure that there is an insurance policy to cover accidents such as stains or dents.

Finally our top tip is to make sure that there is a bottle of champagne on ice ready for your fist journey as a married couple.
