Your Dream Carriage
(Article by Lisa and John from elegant Carriages Desborough)

Your wedding carriage

If you have dreamt of arriving at your wedding in a Horse Drawn Carriage, below are some points to consider:

1) Remember that a horse drawn carriage may not travel as far or as fast as a car! - however speak to the suppliers and see whether they have any options of transferring to a car on route to the ceremony or possibility of staying in a more local hotel nearer to the ceremony venue. Usually the Supplier, due to the welfare of the horses, have a maximum distance that they are willing to travel.

2) For the welfare of the horses, always advise the Supplier if there are any significant hills on the journey, in order that they may check this when booking. This will avoid any problems at a later stage.

3) The Supplier should, prior to the date, check the route over in order to identify any hazards such as cattle grids, tight turning circles etc, this will allow them to provide you with accurate timings, in order to get you to the venue on time!!

4) You have dreamt of arriving at your wedding in a horse drawn carriage, but you are having a civil ceremony and reception at the same venue -
Speak to the supplier with regards to arriving at the venue in the carriage and then the ceremony, some photos with the carriage and horses, followed by a relaxing drive.

5) Types of Turnout: these vary greatly and with our unpredictable British climate, it is best to go for a hooded carriage such as a Landau as opposed to a carriage with a single hood e.g. a Victoria. Usually the Landaus will be pulled by a pair of horses, rather than a single. It is advisable to always ask to view the carriage and horses, prior to booking.

6)What experience the horses have had in this type of work and try to obtain some recommendations from the Suppliers previous clients (i.e. thank you letters).

7) Turnouts should always have 2 people i.e. a Coachman and Groom. The turnout of these may also vary from Full Livery (traditionally worn in times gone by) to a bowler for the Coachman and hat for the Groom.
8) The supplier should have in place public liability insurance. We hope this helps you in booking your trans port and ensuring that you fulfil your wishes and have the perfect day!"
